Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team (Plymouth)

Registered Charity Number 1106095

A call at 03:20 on 10 Jul to a residential home outside of Roborough to look for a man who had gone walkabout from the home. He was found safe and well in the car park after a couple of hours search in the immediate area.

At 1330 on 22 Jun we had a call from ambulance control to assist with the evacuation of a fallen climber. The ambulance service and fellow climbers evacuated him to the road, thence to Derriford by ambulance.

We helped to locate a group of walkers who became lost on the moors in the evening of Sat 21 Jun. Shortly after 10pm on Saturday police received a call from a member of the public stating that he was part of a group of five persons who had become lost on Dartmoor. They had set off from the Two Bridges Hotel heading north. They believed they were somewhere in the area of Wistman’s Wood. One of the party had sustained a leg injury and was unable to walk. A search was launched involving police officers and members of the team and the group was found by a Tavistock dog team  to the east of Higher White Tor at about 1.40am. They were found safe and well, recovered from the moor and returned to Two Bridges.

On 26 May we had a call from Tavistock at about 0600 the morning after the DRG 40th anniversary dinner. A potential suicide in the Leeden Tor area. The car had been found with an empty wine bottle, empty pill packets and a note. The search was stood down after the subject was found to have been in Derriford hospital since at least 0200.

A patient from the Glenbourne unit at Derriford was reported missing on 26 Apr. It was feared she might self harm by raising her blood sugar count. We were tasked to search the grounds of Saltram House. She was found by the police at the house of a friend who nobody knew about.

19 Apr was a joint search with Tavistock at Beardown for a D of E team with a hypothermic member. The team made their own way off, but we had to search for the 2 despatched paramedics who went walkabout! They were found near Brown’s House heading into the moor.

The next day on 28 Mar we went to Gutter Tor again for another D of E team this time thought to be in a 4km radius of Erme Pits. They were found near Hook Lake cold but otherwise unharmed.

On 27 Mar we were called out to Gutter Tor to look for and evacuate a member of a Duke of Edinburgh expedition team from a Bristol school, believed to have heart problems. They were found near Giant’s Basin and the whole team evacuated safely.

On another Wednesday, this time on 26 Mar we were in Ivybridge looking for a 15 year old girl missing from home. She was found cold but well at Ivybridge Rugby Club.

On 19 Mar we were tasked to Greenbank to search open ground in the area for a 10-year-old boy missing from home. He turned up at home as we assembled.

Our first shout of 2008 was on 12 Mar. We were called out to Burrator reservoir to look for a nine year old girl missing from a school party. After a major search she was found cold but unharmed near Deancombe Farm.

A glorious moonlight night and we were tasked to Dartmeet on 23 Nov to look for a suicidal despondent who had driven from Durham. He was found hiding under a bush about 800m from his car, by  the police helicopter . The helicopter picked up the light from a very small torch that the subject was using. He was found as we assembled.

An odd one this, we were called on 13 Oct for a motorist who had put his car in a ditch near Blackaton Cross. He subsequently melted into the surrounding countryside. He texted his passengers to say that he was lying in a ditch and minded to end it all. We were called because he had previously attempted suicide whilst in prison. He wasn’t found and the police suspected he made his way back to Plymouth.

We were called to go to Buckland Abbey to look for a 68 year old Alzheimer’s sufferer. This came in whilst we were scattered on a radio exercise on 11 September. It was passed to Tavistock team and we later assisted them. The search was stood down at midnight and resumed the following morning. Shortly after the resumption the subject was found cold but otherwise unscathed.

On 6 August the team was in Albaston, working with the Cornwall team in the search for a 70 year old male Alzheimer's sufferer. The gentleman in question was found north of the search area and taken to hospital.

On 15 July we were tasked to Peat Cott to assist Tavistock team look for another D of E team. They were found as we assembled.

On 5 July we were asked to find a D of E team that had failed to show up at their designated campsite at Buckland Ford. Our RVwas Shipley Bridge.  Some team members were sent up the Redlake track and found the wanderers near Left Lake.

The first shout of 2007 was on February 10th for a Ten Tors team, allegedly on Crow Tor,

with one member suffering from hypothermia. We deployed from Holming Beam and the team was found near Littaford Tor.
