The Walk
The circular route starts at Walkhampton Memorial Hall. It is just under 13 miles in length, on roads, paths or tracks, and with a little cross country work. Checkpoints along the route will be manned by personnel from Dartmoor Search & Rescue Team Plymouth and a sweep team will walk the route after the last walkers have left in order to ensure that no one is left behind.
This walk has been designed as a direct result of requests from the participants on our walks and skills weekends for a chance to walk on Dartmoor at night. The date has been selected so as to be as near the full moon as possible whilst avoiding the bird nesting season. If the weather is kind you may see the sunset and the moon rise.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE WALK.
Suggested Equipment: Suitable boots and walking clothes for a night on open moor land in July. You should have at least a map, compass, torch, food & fluids, whistle, waterproofs, hat, gloves, first aid kit, survival bag, spare clothing, emergency food, spare batteries and a spare bulb.
Skills: As part of the walk is on open moorland, at least one of the team must have basic navigation, compass and map reading skills.
Timings: The walk will start at 9.00 pm, with a cut off for the finish at Walkhampton of 4.00 am on Sunday.
Car Parking. Limited parking in Walkhampton, further details supplied with
booking confirmation.
Breakfast. Tea, coffee and a biscuit will be supplied in the Hall at the end
of the walk.
Preparation of Own Route: The walk will start and finish at Walkhampton Memorial Hall. The walk has the Grid references for each of the checkpoints on the Route as only some are named; each team must plan and prepare their own routes using the information already given. The map used for the information and preparation of this walk is Ordnance Survey OL 28 (Edition B1 with Access Land) Map of Dartmoor North & South 1:25,000. Either this edition or the Outdoor Leisure Map Number 28, Dartmoor North & South 1:25,000 may be used by navigators who should be aware that the editions of the map are not necessarily identical.
And Finally. SSSSSH! Please remember that by the time you return to Walkhampton the inhabitants will be asleep and would appreciate it if they could remain that way.
Thank you for supporting this walk, we hope you enjoy the experience of walking at night on Dartmoor, and hope to see you on one or both of our Annual Walks, The Lych Way in September or the 12 Across in February.
