2 Jan 2012:
We
have just
heard from Waitrose Saltash
that we managed to outshine their other
two charities by a considerable factor.
The upshot was that we got a staggering
70% of the vote, meaning £700
will be on its way to us! Also we helped
out with collecting in Peverell for
Drake Rotary and we've just had a
cheque for £340.
I think you'll agree - that is an
excellent start to the year!
4 Dec 11:
To
everyone who came to Sainsbury's on

We have
been
nominated
as one
of the
charities
of the
month
for December
at the
Saltash
branch
of
Waitrose.
The branch nominated three charities
every month and shoppers vote for which
one they would like to support. Waitrose
then make
donations
to
reflect
this.
So
please
encourage
family
and
friends
who shop
at
Waitrose
to vote
for us!

Search
and Rescue with the guides! On Tuesday 5
July we had the pleasure of showing 10th
Plympton Guides what we do on the moor.
10th Plympton Guides and their unit has
chosen Dartmoor Search and Rescue as
their charity to support this year. As a
result they want to find out more about
what we do. We used them as casualties,
and some joined in with the search
teams. Most had a go at carrying a Bell
stretcher as well.

RAY MEARS LEADS TICK BITE PREVENTION
WEEK
Bushcraft
and Survival expert Ray Mears has joined
the fight against Lyme disease by
lending his support to tick-borne
disease charity BADA-UK (Borreliosis and
Associated Diseases Awareness-UK).
Tick Bite Prevention Week, which runs
from 11-17th April 2011, is an annual
programme which helps promote awareness
of tick-borne diseases and effective
tick bite prevention for at-risk groups.
According to the Health Protection
Agency, up to 3,000 people contract Lyme
disease (Borreliosis) from the bite of
an infected tick each year in the UK. As
a victim of Lyme disease himself, Ray
understands the importance of being
aware of ticks and the diseases they
carry, and of the preventative measures
that can be taken to help prevent ticks
from biting people and pets.
"I feel that there is not enough
awareness of Lyme disease in this
country, given the fact that in rare
cases it may become chronic", Ray said.
A dedicated website has been launched
offering advice on what to do if bitter
and how to stay protected in the warmer
months at
www.tickbitepreventionweek..org.
More information about Lyme disease and
BADA-UK can be found at
www.bada-uk.org.

Hill and mountain walkers urged to
register for emergency SMS text service.
Walkers who visit areas with bad mobile
phone access can now register with a new
service that allows 999 calls to be made
via a text message.
Heather Morning, safety adviser with the
Mountaineering Council of Scotland, is
urging walkers and climbers to register
for this service in advance and not to
wait for an emergency. She says, "If you
cannot make voice calls, you can now
contact the 999 emergency services by
SMS text from your mobile phone. "This
is going to be particularly useful for
those needing 999 assistance in the
hills when mobile reception is poor and
there is not enough signal to make a
call."
The emergency SMS service was
established originally for deaf,
hard-of-hearing and speech-impaired
people. It allows users to contact the
UK 999 services by sending an SMS text
message.
Mountain Rescue Services in the UK are
usually coordinated by the police.
For more information and to register for
the emergency SMS service, visit

19 Oct 10:
Information released from the
South & Mid Wales Cave Rescue Team:
On
the 9th October the team (South
& Mid Wales Cave Rescue Team)
was involved in a joint
exercise with the Mountain Rescue Teams &
Search & Rescue Dogs Association. This
was a PR event sponsored by Goodyear who
have been sponsoring Mountain and cave
Rescue Teams in the UK. The venue for the
training was Penwyllt itself, and the aim of
the day was to set up a scenario that
reflected the work of the teams involved and
allowed the new laptops and search control
software, SARMAN, to be shown off to the
sponsors. This can be tied to GPS trackers
and allows superb monitoring of the teams
and equipment deployed on the hill.
Obviously a bit more problematic for cavers
but we are starting to use the software and
it is certainly proving to be a useful
control tool.
The days scenario involved two lost persons
who were meant to be walking part of the
Beacons way. This involved search sweeps on
the hill which found an injured walker who
report their colleague had ventured into a
cave. Que the cave rescue team! We initiate
a search of the Top entrance area of Ogof
Ffynnon Ddu and find the missing person
injured in the Upper Column Series. A medic
and stretcher team is dispatched and the
casualty rescued. We had a good mix of
people on the stretcher carry which went
well. thanks to Kate for putting up with
being rescued! On exiting the cave we are
met by photographers and film crew as we
carry out a handover to the MR teams.
Whilst obviously a bit contrived to fit in
with the PR function it was a useful day. It
was good to work with the MR teams and the
day built on the very positive joint
training that we were part of earlier this
year. there is definitely scope for further
joint trainings of this type.
I personally would also like to thank you
all for your support; I felt everyone’s
commitment was outstanding, you made
Goodyear feel that they were part of our
family, I couldn’t have asked for more.
A quote from Goodyear on Facebook;
Goodyear
Tyres - The Goodyear team are back in the
office following a spectacular weekend with
Mountain Rescue England and Wales learning
all about how they use the latest technology
to aid their search and rescue missions.
Watch this space to find out more
With your help I’m confident that Goodyear
will want to extend their sponsorship deal
with MREW, this in return will benefit all
teams.
Thank you on behalf of Mountain Rescue
England & Wales.

13-14 Dec 2009: Another
successful weekend of bag packing at Sainsbury's. We don't
know the full total yet, but we hope we've topped £1000. Sunday was a very
bitterly cold day with the wind blowing across the front
of the store and those selling our merchandise were
seriously thinking about moving indoors!
1 Dec 2009: On a cold and
very wet night 7 members of Sainsbury's and their
families joined us out on the moor for a Search and
Rescue Exercise. All were deployed as casualties to
three separate sites. Two groups were found by foot
teams and the third by Sunny our Search Dog. All were
treated and returned safely to the car park either by
stretcher or by a walk-off. their successful find was
celebrated by some seasonal mince pies which went down a
real treat, especially as the rain decided to abate
later in the evening. May we thank all the casualties
for turning out on such an awful night and providing us
with casualties to enable us to carry out some very
valuable training.
23 Nov 2009: 8 of the
team passed the Casualty Care Exam over the weekend and
are now qualified Casualty Carers. Well done to you all!
17 Nov 2009: A message
from Sunny our Search Dog:
Just
to let you all know that last weekend my Dad took me up
to the (not so sunny) Peak District. Just to get my own
back for leaving me all night in a cold dark van with
Springer Spaniel Scoot and not left nice and comfy under
his bed at home, I dragged him up and down these very
steep and slippery hills and crags. I totally ignored
him, for a change and found in record time lots of nice
people who played with me and with my toy. I thought he
would be rather annoyed with me but at the end of the
weekend he looked really pleased! Humans - I just don't
understand them!
And a message from Alan his dog handler:
Yep we've gone and done it and become DSRT Plymouth's
first Full Grade Search Dog and Handler! What a
relief. Sunny really did work hard, ranged well and had
some really good strikes. I understand the assessors
were really impressed. What a star!

£1250. Excellent
news to round off a great week!
4 Nov 2009: Sainsbury's
Regional Colleagues Council present the team with a
cheque for £3000 as a result of all the bag packing the

demonstration of a stretcher being loaded on board. Many
thanks once again!
